Transformative Change

As a new year begins, you make a resolution to get in shape and live a healthier lifestyle. You jump right in, committing to daily gym visits, eating healthier meals, engaging in healthy habits, and drinking more water. Initially, you notice the number on the scale decreasing, which boosts your happiness and motivates you to keep going. However, the scale stops moving after a while, and your motivation starts to wane. Going to the gym becomes more challenging, and you begin indulging in unhealthy foods and behaviors. You feel rebellious whenever you are faced with choosing a healthy choice, and your inner voice tells you to go ahead and eat the whole pint of ice cream. You drink more soda than water, making you feel guilty afterward. The people around you tell you they knew you would give up trying to be healthy and get in shape, as you have done in the past. Suddenly, it hits you that you've returned to your original habits, leaving you feeling guilty, ashamed, and defeated.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. For years, I found myself in the same situation. I would feel highly motivated to get in shape and become healthier. I would go all in and tell myself this time, it would work. However, I eventually realized that I wasn't truly ready for change. I set unrealistic goals and didn't fully understand what I genuinely wanted other than what I believed I should want.

Upon reflection and tapping sessions, I discovered that I was actually afraid of change because it made me vulnerable to the judgments of others. I viewed change as something I desired but also as something too frightening to achieve. This led me to self-sabotage and remain in my comfort zone, even though I was unhappy.

I realized that my focus was on changing my outward appearance rather than my inner beliefs and feelings. My goal was based on how I wanted to look instead of how I wanted to feel. I set conditions for my happiness, thinking, "I will not be happy unless I am thin." I believed that if I looked a certain way, my life would dramatically improve in all aspects. I thought that being thin would lead to happiness, a better job, more friends, increased finances, and better relationships. However, I’ve come to understand that my weight has nothing to do with those outcomes.

Transformative change occurs from the inside out. By focusing on identifying and releasing your internal barriers, you can promote change in your external environment. We often overlook internal changes when we only focus on altering our outward appearance, but these changes are crucial for creating lasting transformations. For instance, maintaining those changes may be challenging if you follow a diet but don’t address the reasons behind your emotional eating. Similarly, if you start working out but don't tackle your limiting core beliefs, you might stop exercising because you feel you won’t be accepted if you change. Transformative change happens when we address what lies beneath the surface, yet this aspect is often missing in traditional weight loss strategies and programs. Incorporating internal work is essential for achieving and sustaining weight loss and overall wellness.
